Judo is a modern martial art, combat, and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue them with a pin, or force them to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Rooted in the principles of maximum efficiency and mutual welfare and respect, judo teaches the use of balance, leverage, and movement in the performance of throws and other skills. It emphasizes safety and full physical activity for top conditioning.
Judo is known for its emphasis on physical and mental growth, and its practice is a means of self-cultivation and improvement. The sport requires not only physical prowess but also a great deal of strategic thinking and quick reflexes, making it a comprehensive discipline for both body and mind.
